GOLD COINS OF THE WORLD
Stack’s is pleased to present a fixed price list containing a large and varied selection of gold coins of the world.
Over the years, Stack’s has been privileged to sell at public auction several of the finest collections of world gold
coins ever assembled. Among them are: Gaston DiBello (1969), Dr. Alfred Globus (1972), the Lighthouse Collec-
tion (1978), the Frederich Knobloch Collection (1980, 1984), the Mortimer Hammel Collection (1982), selections
from the J. Pierpont Morgan Collection (1983), and the International Collection (1988). The collecting of world
gold coins continues to grow in popularity today, as more and more collectors are awakened to the incredible
variety available in this broad area of numismatics.
Whether you collect one coin from each country or one coin of each denomination or a select example from each
century. Stack’s is hopeful that you will find something in the following pages that fits your collecting interest.
GOLD FROM THE
ANCIENT WORLD
The Ancient gold coins described below provide
a good introduction to this exciting area of nu-
mismatics. The pieces are truly masterpieces in
miniature, engraved by the finest artisans who
were able to fashion in small spaces finely en-
graved images in high relief, capturing the heral-
dic majesty of a city emblem or the often brutally
realistic features of contemporary kings and em-
perors. It is with the greatest pleasure that we
offer these pieces to you in the hope that you will
experience the excitement of owning these lovely
works of art and history.

MODERN GOLD COINS
The collecting of Modern World Gold Coins has
become the pursuit of many individuals in recent
years. Whether they collect all the types of coins
from one country, or a specimen from each coun-
try from Afghanistan to Zanzibar, collectors rec-
ognize the historical importance of these coins
and the lasting value they represent. For in their
individual designs, enhanced by the rich golden
lustre of their metallic content, the pieces carry
through time an idea of the cultures of which they
are a tangible manifestation.

THE SUPREMELY RARE
1938 CZECHOSLOVAKIA
10 DUCAT
79
Stock # Price
79 10 Ducats, 1951. Types as above. Fr.4. An ex-
cellent companion to the preceding piece in
terms of rarity. The coin was the last issue of
the old type in use from 1929 through 1938.
KM lists the mintage of this issue as 100
pieces, while Jaeger and Pick listed the mint-
age at 150. In keeping with the reasoning
employed on the 1938 issue, it is this catalog-
er’s contention that Jaeger and Pick are most
probably correct and that the actual mintage
is 150 pieces. Nonetheless, the rarity. of this
issue is well established. Brilliant Uncircu-
lated and a gem. $6,000.00
78 10 Ducats, 1938. Types as above. Fr.4. One of
the classic rarities of the entire gold series.
The coin has an interesting and colourful his-
tory. Struck just prior to the German inva-
sion of Czechoslovakia, the mintage of this
issue has been confused by authors since the
early 1970’s. Krause-Mishler lists the mint-
age at 192 pieces, but Jaeger and Pick listed
the mintage at 34 pieces in the 1970 cata-
logue of coins and banknotes of Czechoslova-
kia. It is quite probable that KM has
switched the mintages for the 1937 and 1938
10 Ducat coins and that the actual mintage of
the 1938 issue is 34 pieces. Either way, this
issue is a great rarity and one of the last gold
coins to be struck on the eve of World War II.
Brilliant Uncirculated and of gem quality.

GOLD 100 LIRE COINS
OF THE VATICAN
The following list contains every date of Vati-
can 100 Lire gold coins struck from 1929 through
1959 except for the very rare 1937 issue and the
unobtainable 1938 issue. Under the terms of the
Lateran Treaty of 1929, the State of Vatican City
has the right to issue coinage in its own name
denominated in Italian Lira. Many dates on the
following list have mintages as low as 1,000
pieces, and it is unlikely that all of these exist due
to attrition.
Complete coinage sets of many dates containing
the 100 Lire gold coin and all of the silver and
base metal coins are often available in the origi-
nal cases of issue. Please call for availability.
All coins are Brilliant Uncirculated and choice
to gem quality.
